Feeling well?

Hopefully, few of you have been struck down by one of the many cold and flu viruses that are going the rounds. But the title of this weekly isn't really to enquire about your health – it was prompted by last week’s release of the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) measures of economic well-being. The ONS's best-known statistic is the gross domestic product (GDP). This estimates how much the economy grew (or shrank) in any given quarter. Actually, we will get the ONS's first estimate of GDP for the final quarter of last year on 26 January, and this will no doubt generate a great deal of interest. But for some time now it has been apparent that the majority of people care little for this somewhat abstract estimate (which is usually incorrect and prone to large revisions). To me, this is why measures of economic wellbeing are increasingly appealing.
