Weekly Brief

Thought of the week

2018 has already produced plenty of headlines and market volatility, however, we are in fact just heading back to normal. The chart below counts the number of days that global equities have closed up or down by more than 1%. Last year there were just three days – one of the calmest years on record. However, this year has already seen 9 days. While the current market environment might seem volatile, history would suggest that this sort of volatility is normal. On average, since 1995, the market has seen 52 days a year where global equities moved by more than 1% in either direction. With central banks beginning to normalise monetary policy, US fiscal stimulus being pushed into the economy and continued geopolitical risks, we are likely to see more normal volatility within financial markets
