From headlines to fundamentals

Regional view – United Kingdom

"Broadly speaking this quarter's earning season hasn't been as good versus expectations as other quarters, but nor has it been particularly weak"

I have spent a bit of time in recent weeks assessing the FTSE 100's exposure to various headline-grabbing issues: trade conflicts, Turkey, and of course Brexit, which rumbles along in the background. Having done this, it seems justified that the UK equity market has held up relatively well despite the recent backdrop, for the following reasons:

The UK's exposure to trade tariffs is relatively limited given our sector makeup; technology and autos are hardly represented in the FTSE. Whilst few companies have mentioned any direct impact, some have commented that in future they might see slightly higher input costs if the trade tariffs escalate and lead to higher global inflation.
