Very Short-Lived Enthusiasm

Market Flash

Chain reactions. Markets had rebounded when China and the US agreed on a ceasefire at the G20 but hopes that relations would take a turn for the better were quickly dashed. Risk aversion remained high due to doubts that the agreement would be implemented. However, China‘s willingness to increase imports and signs of upbeat economic trends were reassuring, albeit insufficient. Investor concerns that the trade war might persist took US Treasury yields lower while expectations that falling oil prices would cause inflation to slow also weighed on sentiment.
