After another turbulent week in the British House of Commons, Theresa May plans to renegotiate with the EU. In essence, May could win the approval of the British Parliament for her Brexit deal if she succeeds in setting a time limit for the planned backstop solution, which should avoid a visible border between Ireland and Northern Ireland in any case. However, leading representatives of the EU (including Commission President Juncker) have made it unmistakably clear that there is no possibility for renegotiations with the EU. The Republic of Ireland, in particular, sees the border issue as a red line and is therefore not prepared to make any concessions on this issue, although an unregulated withdrawal would lead to border controls rather sooner than later on the Irish island.
