Brexit – Next deadline probably April 12

Week Ahead
With the British Prime Minister's offer to resign and eight failed votes on possible alternatives to the current divorce package, there was a lot of noise this week, but no progress on the issue. A vote on the relevant part of the divorce package is scheduled for Friday. This could bring the drama to an end. But since both Labour and coalition partner DUP are defying the government, even this last attempt will probably fail. This will leave hard Brexit on the table for April 12. Until then, the British government or parliament must succeed in offering the other EU countries a credible alternative. The votes in parliament this week showed that the proposals for a soft Brexit (Norwegian model) were less lacking in a majority than the other alternatives. Although this is an indication, it is not enough to deduce a probable outcome of the negotiations.
